‘I always think that’s the most important thing—to feel like you belong in every room you’re in.’- Shonda Rhimes
I am going out on a limb to address the elephant in the room. You are worthy. You deserve to take up space in the room. “Taking up space” is a self-love concept that I have fallen in love with. Taking up space means taking ownership of your voice and finding the value in it. You are not a burden. You deserve a seat at the table, just like that man sitting up there. Taking up space also means knowing that you belong in all places that you are in, you are an asset to those around you. Say it out loud: I am deserving. I belong here.
The idea of taking up space can be summarized as love of yourself, body, and mind, and making all places in your life a safe space for yourself. When you do not acknowledge that you belong, or downplay your role…you only hurt yourself. The only one criticizing you, is you. And, even if your older male boss makes you feel small, unintelligent, or unworthy, stand up tall and know that they are the one that actually is insecure. They are projecting their insecurities onto you to make you feel like you don’t know better. Luckily for you, you do.
You deserve to feel welcomed and whole in all places that you live your life. If you feel like you laugh too loud, smile too big or “don’t fit” into a particular environment, that is simply wrong. Every single person adds something unique to the spaces they occupy, and all people are invaluable, in their own particular way. We were made to be unique. That’s what makes you special. No matter the circumstance, you need to be authentic to your needs and wants and make sure you are comfortable achieving success in all situations. You not only owe it to yourself, but you will function at a higher level and flourish when you allow yourself to feel as though you belong.
One of our three core values here at Dream Dance Fitness is power, and taking up space is allowing yourself to feel powerful! Unearthing what you already have within, to help you to love and express yourself freely. You are valuable, intelligent and brave. You should never have to mute those traits, no matter where you are. I see you.
