We all want to experience joy, but sometimes it can seem elusive. We may think joy is something we find outside ourselves, in accomplishments, relationships, or material goods. But the truth is, joy is always available to us, right here, right now. One of my coaches taught me that joy is my birth right! When I first heard her say that, I broke down in tears.

My coach took me on an emotional tour…and then I realized the key to experiencing joy lies in self-love. We can find joy in even the smallest moments and experiences when we love and accept ourselves. Here are some ways to cultivate self-love and discover joy in everyday life.
Embrace Your Inherent Worth: Reflect on your self-worth and recognize the unique qualities that define you. True joy comes from understanding that your value isn’t determined by external validations but by the inherent goodness and uniqueness, you bring to the world.
Tip: Create a “Strengths Journal” where you regularly jot down your accomplishments, positive qualities, and moments when you felt proud of yourself. Reflecting on these entries will reinforce your self-worth.
Appreciate Your Own Company: We often fill our calendars with social events to avoid being alone. However, it is essential to spend time with yourself, enjoy your own company, and reflect on your thoughts. Take yourself out for a movie, a coffee date, or sit by a park to enjoy the sunset. These moments allow you to connect with yourself and focus on your happiness.
Tip: Schedule regular “me-time” activities, and be present in the moment.
Learn a New Skill: Learning something new can boost your self-esteem and provide a sense of achievement. Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument, learning how to pole dance, or any other skill, engage in classes to expand your horizons. The pride and confidence gained from mastering a new skill contribute to your overall sense of joy.
Tip: Set realistic goals for your skill acquisition and celebrate milestones along the way. The journey of learning itself becomes a source of joy.
Be Present: We often rush through our days without noticing what’s around us. To appreciate the small things, be in the moment. Spend a few minutes daily meditating or being mindful—focus on your breath or the sounds. This helps you be more aware of your surroundings and enjoy the simple, beautiful moments in your life.
