Mind Over Matter

Public speaking…ever wonder how people do it? Want a little extra boost of confidence or a shot of courage to face life’s challenges? Whether it’s a big presentation at work, a tricky conversation, or starting something new, having a strong mental toolkit can make all the difference. Let’s dive into some practical mental exercises and techniques that can help you build that unshakeable confidence and a daring mindset.

1. Positive Visualization
What’s It About?
Positive visualization is all about picturing yourself succeeding in whatever you’re setting out to do. It’s like giving your brain a sneak preview of success.

How to Do It:

  1. Find a quiet, comfy spot.
  2. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
  3. Visualize a specific situation where you need a confidence boost. Maybe it’s nailing that presentation or acing a job interview.
  4. Imagine every detail: what you’re wearing, the room, the way you speak, and how others respond positively to you.
  5. Feel the emotions of success and let them wash over you.
  6. Then, before you enter the room, visualize the 4 corners of the room, and then head in.

Why It Works:
When you visualize success, your brain starts to believe it’s possible, making you feel more confident and less anxious when the real moment arrives.

2. Affirmations
What’s It About?
Affirmations are positive statements you repeat to yourself to challenge and overcome negative thoughts.

How to Do It:

  1. Think about areas where you feel insecure.
  2. Create positive statements that counter these insecurities, like “I am capable and strong” or “I handle challenges with grace.”
  3. Repeat these affirmations daily, especially before you face a tough situation.

Why It Works:
Regularly telling yourself positive things can help shift your mindset from self-doubt to self-assurance.

3. The Power Pose
What’s It About?
Standing or sitting in powerful postures can actually boost your confidence and reduce stress.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet apart and hands on your hips (the classic “Wonder Woman” pose).
  2. Hold this pose for 2-3 minutes before you need to tackle something challenging.
  3. As Mel Robbins says, you could even give yourself a high five in the mirror before heading out there.

Why It Works:
Research shows that power poses can increase levels of testosterone (which is linked to confidence) and decrease levels of cortisol (which is linked to stress). It’s a quick and easy way to get a confidence boost.

4. Mindfulness Meditation
What’s It About?
Mindfulness is about being present in the moment and not getting caught up in worries or distractions.

How to Do It:

  1. Set aside 5-10 minutes in a quiet place.
  2. Sit comfortably and focus on your breath.
  3. Notice your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Just let them come and go.
  4. Gently bring your focus back to your breath whenever your mind starts to wander.

Why It Works:
Practicing mindfulness can help you stay calm and focused, making it easier to maintain your confidence and composure, even in stressful situations.

5. Self-Compassion
What’s It About?
Treating yourself with kindness and understanding, just like you would treat a good friend.

How to Do It:

  1. When you feel self-doubt or experience a setback, acknowledge your feelings without beating yourself up.
  2. Remind yourself that it’s okay to be imperfect; everyone is.
  3. Engage in self-soothing activities, like speaking kindly to yourself and doing things that make you happy. Imagine speaking to your best friend.

Why It Works:
Being kind to yourself can reduce self-criticism and build a stronger, more resilient sense of self.

Remember, confidence is something that comes from within, and with a bit of practice, you can cultivate a daring and fearless approach to life.
